The United Nation proclaimed May 22nd as the International Day of Biological Diversity or Biodiversity (IDB) to increase knowledge and awareness of biodiversity issues and observe each year, a special aspect of biodiversity throughout the year. The theme of the seminar is "Marine Biodiversity of India — Threats & Prospects". It provides parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and everyone interested in marine life, the opportunity to raise awareness of the issues and increase practical action. Marine resource, being regarded as "common property" of mankind is accessible to all for indiscriminate exploitation and it is always subject to various threats from point and non-point sources. As such, marine biodiversity, especially marine fishery resources of the inshore sector, needs to be preserved and protected for sustainable utilization by the local coastal communities.

In this context the proposed national seminar will provide a platform for presenting and gathering data and information on marine life including marine, estuarine and mangrove ecosystems that support and sustain marine biodiversity. Keeping this in view, Department of Zoology of Raja Peary Mohan College, Uttarpara, Hooghly, West Bengal in collaboration with Social Environmental Biological Association, Kolkata would be organising a UGC Sponsored National Seminar on "MARINE BIODIVERSITY OF INDIA — THREATS & PROSPECTS" on the 24th and 25th September, 2013 to promote understanding and awareness of the marine resource conservation and management issues. The eminent marine scientists and social scientists will deliver lectures, followed by presentation of papers by participants (oral/poster) on the theme of the seminar, which will benefit particularly, the participating teachers and students of various universities and colleges.
